Derek Parsons

My work is the culmination of my educational and life experiences. With a varied background, I studied mathematics and computer science at UC Santa Cruz but shifted paths after the pandemic. My training in observation and reasoning skills is evident in my art, which parallels the tradition of mathematics through observation, intuition, and construction. This switch reinforced my commitment to learning and allowed me to pursue my true interests.

I primarily work with paint, finding it a balance of observation and rendering. I aim to depict the dynamic relationship between introspection and outward observation, often focusing on subjects to which I have a personal connection. My projects tend towards realism to create meaningful pieces.

I have exhibited in juried group shows at the Kruglak Gallery in Oceanside, CA, in 2022 and 2023, winning first place for my paintings both years. I will participate in two more group exhibitions there in May and June 2024. At MiraCosta College, being surrounded by admired artists has greatly improved my work. Additional academic experience at CCA will further develop my art and ideas, making it an ideal environment for growth and learning.
